Barack Obama bought himself the presidency.  Actually, others bought it for him.  He just had to make the promises.

I do not know if he is cognizant of this.  When and if he comes to the realization, he might swallow his pride and toss that silver back into the temple but that is doubtful.  He'll be needing serious forgiveness to regain his soul.

I Hope You Don't Have Plans To Start A Taxi Company In Dallas....

...that would be illegal.

Dallas City Code - Taxicabs

Consider the opportunity.  Buy a Trifun, a Chinese made vehicle manufactured by the Estes family of Michigan.  There is a dealer in Grapevine according to the Trifun web site. (he doesn't get a hyperlink until I get a confirmation from him)

The Trifun is economical, safe, reliable, and would be perfect in Dallas.  A hard working cab driver could make a good living.

Here is the downside -
Some of the tastier tidbits from the Dallas City Code:
SEC. 45-1.1.     STATEMENT OF POLICY.     It is the policy of the city of Dallas to provide for and to promote adequate and efficient taxicab service in the city.  To this end, this chapter provides for the regulation of taxicab rates and services, to be carried out in a manner that protects the public health and safety, promotes the public convenience and necessity, and respects the concept of free enterprise. FAIL (Ord. 15127)
SEC. 45-2.1.     OPERATING AUTHORITY REQUIRED.     (a)     A person may not operate a taxicab service inside the city without operating authority granted under this chapter, nor may a person transport a passenger for hire inside the city by taxicab unless the person driving the taxicab or another who employs or contracts with the driver has been granted perating authority under this chapter. In other words, you cannot work at your chosen profession without OUR permission.
 (b)     The holder of a franchise must provide taxicab service to the entire city with a minimum of 50 taxicabs.  A franchise may not be granted for a period longer than 15 years. Small business - You are screwed.
(4)     a description of any past business experience of the applicant, particularly in providing passenger transportation services, and an identification and description of any revocation or suspension of a franchise or permit held by the applicant or business before the date of filing the application. Since you're working for us (Dallas City Council), we demand experience.  New guy - You are screwed.
Mary Ruwart says "In many cities, would-be taxi and van drivers can't conduct business without paying exorbitant fees (over $200,000 in New York City) for the medallions (licenses). In some cases, the city or county won't grant new licenses at any price. Such government intervention creates a great deal of poverty by putting people out of work!"
Minneapolis is removing the barriers to economic opportunity for it's citizens.
Just as requiring licenses for health care providers results in fewer doctors and nurses, greater expense to patients, and a less healthy populous, requiring licenses for transportation providers results in less commerce and more poverty.
Follow the money - somebody is getting paid.

Dear Sirs:

I am concerned regarding the possible nationalization of health care.  I do not want any increase of government involvement in this vital industry.  I much prefer that government obey the Constitution.

If legislation is passed that increases governmental control of the medical / health industry, what will the GOP do ?

When a Republican majority Congress is active will you rescind the acts passed by a Democrat majority Congress ?  Will you eliminate funding for the governmental health care agencies ?

I eagerly await you response.

Lion Country Safari

I was ill-equipped, unable or unwilling to learn the sport of football -  not good for an East Texan.  Midway through 8th grade, my second year in pads, my post-season weight was 88 pounds.  I decided then and there that the extra mass I would pack on over the summer before High School would be unfair to the opposing squads.  It was time to retire.

Never played Texas High School Football and never visited Lion Country Safari in Grand Prairie but,,,, I can still visit if I travel to Florida.

=========

Lion Country Safari Inc. was founded in 1967 by a group of South African and British entrepreneurs who wished to provide a safari experience for families who would not normally be able to experience it. The park originally exhibited only lions.

Between 1967 and 1974, Lion Country Safari, Inc. opened 6 animal parks, one near each of the following American cities: West Palm Beach, Florida; Los Angeles, California; Dallas, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Richmond, Virginia.

The first park, in South Florida, is the only Lion Country Safari still in operation. At one time there were parks in Irvine, California (1970-1984); Grand Prairie, Texas (1971-1992); Stockbridge, Georgia; Mason, Ohio (1974-1993) and Doswell, Virginia (1974-1993).

Fools On the Hill

by Don Boudreaux on December 3, 2009

Here’s a letter that I sent earlier this afternoon to a reporter for CBS News:
Mr. Bob Foss, CBS Radio News
New York, NY

Dear Mr. Foss:

On today’s 1:00pm national-news radio broadcast you reported that the Senate voted to require all insurance companies “to cover mammograms and pap smears at no cost.”

The Senate can vote as much as it wants to do such a thing, but it might just as well vote to stop the earth from rotating or flies from buzzing.  To be performed, mammograms and pap smears require resources, both human and non-human.  These resources have alternative uses.  So whenever these resources are used to produce a mammogram or a pap smear, other things that these resources could have been – but aren’t – used to produce are not produced.  The value of the goods and services that are not produced is the mammogram’s or pap-smear’s cost.

And because these procedures are inevitably costly, there is an inevitable cost to insurers of covering them.

In theory, government might force A to pay for B’s mammograms and pap smears.  But it absolutely cannot eliminate these costs.
In practice – and especially if “health-care reform” makes the health-insurance industry more competitive – insurers’ cost of covering these procedures will inevitably be reflected in the premiums they charge.  Firms in competitive industries are driven out of business if they don’t cover all of their costs.

You and your colleagues in the mainstream media should stop speaking as if costs can be magically legislated away by the Fools on the Hill.  Such a change in the way you report the news would be a first step toward a more realistic assessment of the limits that constrain government’s power to create heaven on earth.

Sincerely,
Donald J. Boudreaux

Unemployed Man

An unemployed man is desperate to support his family of a wife and three kids. He applies for a janitor’s job at a large firm and easily passes an aptitude test.

The human resources manager tells him, "You will be hired at minimum wage. Let me have your e-mail address so that we can get you in the loop. Our system will automatically e-mail you all the forms and advise you when to start and where to report on your first day."

Taken back, the man protests that he is poor and has neither a computer nor an e-mail address. To this the manager replies, "You must understand that to a company like ours that means that you virtually do not exist. Without an e-mail address you can hardly expect to be employed by a high-tech firm . Good day."

Stunned, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and having $10 in his wallet, he walks past a farmers’ market and sees a stand selling 25 lb. crates of beautiful red tomatoes. He buys a crate, carries it to a busy corner and displays the tomatoes. In less than 2 hours he sells all the tomatoes and makes 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 and arrives home that night with several bags of groceries for his family.

During the night he decides to repeat the tomato business the next day. By the end of the week he is getting up early every day and working into the night. He multiplies his profits quickly.

Early in the second week he acquires a cart to transport several boxes of tomatoes at a time, but before a month is up he sells the cart to buy a broken-down pickup truck.  At the end of a year he owns three old trucks. His two sons have left their neighborhood gangs to help him with the tomato business, his wife is buying the tomatoes, and his daughter is taking night courses at the community college so she can keep books for him.

By the end of the second year he has a dozen very nice used trucks and employs fifteen previously unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. He continues to work hard.

Time passes and at the end of the fifth year he owns a fleet of nice trucks and a warehouse that his wife supervises, plus two tomato farms that the boys manage. The tomato company’s payroll has put hundreds of homeless and jobless people to work. His daughter reports that the business grossed over one million dollars.

Planning for the future, he decides to buy some life insurance. Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. Then the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically. When the man replies that he doesn’t have time to mess with a computer and has no e-mail address, the insurance man is stunned, "What, you don’t have e-mail? No computer? No Internet? Just think where you would be today if you’d had all of that five years ago!"

"Ha!" snorts the man. "If I’d had e-mail five years ago I would be sweeping floors and making $5.35 an hour."

Which brings us to the moral of the story:
Since you got this story by e-mail, you’re probably closer to being a janitor than a millionaire.  Sadly, I received it also.

I thought this story was going to end by telling how a government bureaucrat wreaked havoc with the man's business.

There was a time when Kings and Princes and Queens would order explorers around the world to bring back spices, vegetables, and meats from all places. Now our rulers order us not to bring spices, vegetables, and meats from all places but rather to munch only on what can be produced on American soil. This is not progress. This is horrible, and it is a general trend. Look at the tariffs on Argentinian beef, French cheese, and Swiss chocolate?

"The urge to gamble is so universal and its practice so pleasurable that I assume it must be evil."
– Heywood Broun

Broun was known as a fairly decent drama critic. However, he once classified Geoffrey Steyne as the worst actor on the American stage. Steyne sued Broun, but a judge threw the case out. The next time Broun reviewed a production with Steyne in the cast, he left the actor out of the review. However, in the final sentence, he wrote, "Mr. Steyne's performance was not up to its usual standard."

My generation might remember Heywood Hale Broun.

libertarianism - noun - a label for a set of moral principles....

libertarianism  - a label for a set of consistently held moral principles grounded in the philosophy that violence never solves social problems. It’s based on taking a reasoned, philosophical approach to complex moral problems — or working from first principles — rather than resorting to political “pragmatism” or coercive statist “solutions.”

Here’s your million-dollar question: Should violence and coercion ever be used to settle social problems?

A.     No

B.     Yes

C.     A and B; only governments should be able to initiate force

What Can Congress Do For You ??

UPS is in a political war with FEDEX.  Both are package-delivery companies, but they're governed by totally different federal labor mandates. As a result, UPS's workforce is much more heavily unionized than FEDEX's—and more than twice as expensive.

UPS is trying to get FEDEX reclassified under the same federal mandates it is obligated to obey.  Why is UPS doing this ?

A) to screw a competitor ?

B) to lower their costs and/or raise FedEx's costs ?

C) The official document.

It makes business sense. It also reveals the real villain:

A government that is big enough to absolutely, positively guarantee it can screw any business.

I want my packages.
Let UPS and FedEx compete with products and services - Not with the graft and corruption rampant in the U.S. Congress.  Let's get the government out of the package delivery business.

==================================================

  1/2 boy 1/2 man

If you read this, you WILL forward it on.
You just won't be able to stop yourself.

The average age of the military man is 19 years.
He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who,
under normal circumstances is considered by
society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind
the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old
enough to die for his country. He never really
cared much for work and he would rather wax
his own car than wash his father's, but he has
 never collected unemployment either.

He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport
activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a
steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when
he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and a 155mm howitzer.

He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he
was at home because he is working or fighting
from before dawn to well after dusk. He has
trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him,
but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and
reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite
to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must.

He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional.

He can march until he is told to stop,
or stop until he is told to march.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation,
but he is not without spirit or individual dignity.
 He is self-sufficient.

He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry.

He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never
to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend
his own clothes, and fix his own hurts.

If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you
are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition
with you in the midst of battle when you run low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons
and weapons like they were his hands.

He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job.

He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay, and still find ironic humor in it all.

He has seen more suffering and death than he should have in his short lifetime.

He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed.

He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away ' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking.
In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years.

He has asked nothing in return, except
 our friendship and understanding.
Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood.

And now we even have women over there in danger, doing their part in this tradition of going to War when our nation calls us to do so.

As you go to bed tonight, remember this shot. . .

A short lull, a little shade and a picture of
 loved ones in their helmets.

Prayer wheel for our military.... please don't
break it Please send this on after a short prayer.

 Prayer Wheel

'Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.'

When you receive this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our ground troops in Afghanistan , sailors on ships, and airmen
in the air, and for those in Iraq , Afghanistan and all foreign countries.

 There is nothing attached...
 This can be very powerful...

Of all the gifts you could give a US Soldier, Sailor, Coastguardsman, Marine, or Airman, prayer is the very best one.

I can't break this one, sorry.
Pass it on to everyone and pray.
You could have been called to serve.

=================================================

All too many of our soldiers have died unnecessarily--because they were sent to fight for a purpose other than America’s freedom.
What we owe these men who fight so bravely for their and our freedom is to send them to war only when that freedom is truly threatened, and to make every effort to protect their lives during war--by providing them with the most advantageous weapons, training, strategy, and tactics possible.

It is often said that our soldiers must sacrifice themselves for our country. This is precisely what we must not ask them to do.
The best way we can honor our veterans and give real meaning to Veterans Day--aside from ceremonies honoring their past and present dedication and bravery--is to promise that we will go to war only when America's interests as a free nation are threatened, and wage it in the uncompromising pursuit of victory.

Meanwhile, the White House "insists that it has no idea what it's going to do about Afghanistan"

I Rode The Bicycle To Work Without My Helmet

I was a mile down the rode towards the job before realizing I'd left the helmet laying on the kitchen floor.  I became a bit apprehensive, realizing that if a 3400 lb car crashed into the Schwinn, without the helmet I'd pretty much be toast.  Not only would most of my limbs be torn, broken, and mangled but the paramedics wouldn't be able to mop up my coconut structure with a ShamWow.  Plus, the Schwinn isn't mine, it belongs to my brother Ken.

With the helmet I'm invincible - jumping off curbs, taking shortcuts through Exall Park, cruising past stopped motorized vehicles to take the front spot at red lights.

This freewheelin', freedom loving, never care, never say die attitude is in my past.  All I've got before me now is a jail term. Bread and water, washin' socks for Bruno, bein' somebody's bitch.  Damn I'm gonna miss work.

My cop dissin', evil, and disgraceful activities might someday be listed at Dallas County's top five wanted list.

Do you notice something about these Pretty Boy Floyd wannabees ?
None of them are wanted for assault, theft, or murder - at least it isn't listed on the front page. Are these evil doers armed and dangerous ?  Not important.

What is important is the balance, the bottom line, the total.
They're wanted because they owe Dallas County money.

Letter to State Representative Chuck Hopson

I sent this email today to Texas Representative Chuck Hopson.
http://chuckhopson.com/

Representative Hopson -

I'm contacting you for information regarding your recent switch from Democrat to Republican. I discovered this change from an article in the internet version of the Dallas Morning News.
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/texassouthwest/stories/DN-partyswitch_07met.ART.State.Edition1.4b97e66.html

Please explain to me the reasoning and the principles behind your recent change of political affiliation. What do you stand for that reflects the Republican Party but is in opposition to the Democratic Party ?

The DMN article says that you changed political affiliation because "more than 70 percent of voters in his district voted for Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election." Did you change political affiliation to more closely match the affiliation of the residents of your district ?

I graduated high school in East Texas - Mount Pleasant. I am a libertarian now residing in Dallas. My principles are reflected here.

What are Chuck Hopson's principles ?

I will share your response with my associates in Texas.

Sincerely,

Tim Lebsack

I Attended The SMU Liberty Forum Last Night

Barry Cooper is running for Attorney General of Texas on a “Pro-Gun, Pro-Pot, Pro-Family” platform.
"I'm a Ron Paul republican."

Cooper is a former police officer who creates the videos Kopbusters and teaches how to avoid getting arrested for traffic stops and drug possession and how to live the cannabis lifestyle without being arrested.

===

Trey Garrison spoke about the First Amendment and the media.

===

Brenda Anderson works with the Fully Informed Jury Association.  She spoke about Jury Nullification and recommended books by Michael Minns and Clay S. Conrad.

===

Master of Ceremonies Spencer Matthews of the SMU Libertarians introduced each speaker and related the story of his tutoring a younger student from China who had never heard of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

The Things You Learn Watching Morning TV

You Can Have Putin's Pecs - See them, envy them, lust them and LEARN HIS SECRETS.

Needing exercise that makes your hair breezy?  You gotta try the Air Climber.

What was I talking about ? Yes, the Air Climber.
It's made of special fiberglass filled resin that is extremely strong and durable and lightweight, like you're gonna be.
Air- as in Air, that soft, gentle stuff that is light, breezy, and clean like Joe Biden.  Air will make you float and it's many hydraulic properties will lift you until you have so much fun that the pounds just melt away.  With the Air Climber, You'll lose more inches than John Bobbitt.

Vlad Putin doesn't train on the Air Climber.  He might consider the Tower 200.
You got a door - You got a Gym.

Do the Eleven Minute Mother Of All Workouts and be fit like Randy Couture.
No assembly necessary but you'll need Norm Abram to re-swing the door.
Al Gore invented the internet and Jake Steinfeld is responsible for creating the personal fitness training industry over 30 years ago.

If none of this works, you've always got a safety - Kymaro Curve Control Jeans.

Women's clothing sizes must be a joke - on the women.  Only a few days ago I saw a television advertisement in which a young woman claimed that she used a diet product and went from a size 12 to a size 4 in four weeks.  Why didn't she just diet for 8 weeks and become the stick sized waif she wants to be ?
