"Tyranny ends when we cease to support voluntarily our own serfdom." -- Helio Beltrao
Billy died.... His will provided $30,000 for this elaborate funeral. As the last guests departed the affair, his wife, Joyce, turned to her oldest and dearest friend, Jonelle. "Well, I'm sure Billy would be pleased," she said.
"I'm sure you're right," replied Jonelle, who lowered her voice and leaned in close. "How much did this really cost?"
"All of it," said Joyce .. "Thirty thousand dollars."
"No!" Jonelle exclaimed. "I mean, it was very nice, but $30,000?"
Joyce answered, "The funeral was $6,500. I donated $500 to the church. The whiskey, wine, food and snacks were another $500.. The rest went for the Memorial Stone." Jonelle quickly computed the total of $7,500 and said "$22,500 for a Memorial Stone? My God, how big is it?"
Joyce answered, "Two and a half carats”.
"No one understood better than Stalin that the true object of propaganda is neither to convince nor even to persuade, but to produce a uniform pattern of public utterance in which the first trace of unorthodox thought immediately reveals itself as a jarring dissonance." -- Alan Bullock
"A human group transforms itself into a crowd when it suddenly responds to a suggestion rather than to reasoning, to an image rather than to an idea, to an affirmation rather than to proof, to the repetition of a phrase rather than to arguments, to prestige rather than to competence." -- Jean-Francois Revel
"When all think alike, no one is thinking very much." -- Walter Lippmann
Letter of the Law
After the Oconee County, South Carolina, courthouse opened seven years ago, federal officials found the $8 million building contained 93 violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. For instance, the centers of the toilets are 19 inches from the wall, not 18 inches as required. And the mirrors in the restrooms are 41 inches from the floor, not 40. It will cost just over $2 million to bring the courthouse up to standard. The county sued its architect and builder, and they will pay a little more than $1 million for the work, leaving taxpayers on the hook for the rest.

"Socialism is the phantastic younger brother of despotism, which it wants to inherit. Socialism wants to have the fullness of state force which before only existed in despotism. ... However, it goes further than anything in the past because it aims at the formal destruction of the individual ... who ... can be used to improve communities by an expedient organ of government." -- Friedrich Nietzsche
"The state represents violence in a concentrated and organized form. The individual has a soul, but as the state is a soulless machine, it can never be weaned from violence to which it owes its very existence." -- Mohandas K. Gandhi
