When we try to engineer communities, the results are disastrous. Forced bussing to integrate schools did nothing to create a community of blacks and whites. Instead, it destroyed the community schools, breaking down the neighborhoods where the schools existed and creating resentment among those who were bussed. It did not improve education for anyone, but instead contributed to the worsening of education for everyone. And the students still self-segregated in the lunchrooms.
